We have all been there. You’re standing in a beautiful location wearing your finest clothes surrounded by your friends. Someone suggests you all have your photo taken, so you oblige. You stand tall and smile wide. When you finally get to see the photo, your heart sinks. You felt beautiful and you sure did look beautiful, but your smile accentuated a dreaded facial feature you wish you could eliminate: your double chin.
If you do an internet search for exercises to reduce your double chin, you’ll find everything from repetitive wide smiling to tucking a ball underneath your chin. Let’s not forget those literal chin strap contraptions that claim to shrink your chin on the market.
Most know that there are many tricks photographers teach their subjects to reduce the appearance of a double chin. Some say push out your chin like you’re trying to touch the wall with it. Others suggest you suck on your tongue. But what if there were something more permanent you could do to reduce your double chin? And no, we’re not talking about a facelift or liposuction. We’re talking about Belkyra™ treatment for a double chin.
The Dreaded Double Chin
If you are bothered by your double chin, or if your double chin makes you look older and heavier than you actually are, keep reading. Sometimes even when you eat well and exercise you can’t seem to reduce the size of your double chin. In fact, this extra fat under your face may not have anything to do with bodyweight at all. It could be due to hormones, bad posture (from hunching over computer screens and Smartphones), or even heredity properties.
The dreaded double chin is also called submental fullness. It is a common, yet under-treated facial aesthetic condition that can impact both men and women of any age. Factors such as aging, where your skin may sag and muscles may droop, weight gain, or genetics may contribute to your double chin’s appearance. The good news is that you are not alone. Many people experience submental fullness at some point in their lives. Some may get rid of it through diet and exercise, but when these methods fail, it is time for something more targeted.
Belkyra™ Treatment for Double Chin
Belkyra™ is the first and only Health Canada and FDA-approved non-surgical prescription treatment used in adults to improve your appearance by helping to reduce a double chin. This non-evasive, safe, and effective option is a wonderful alternative to traditional cosmetic surgeries. In fact, Belkyra™ is actually a brand made by Allergan, the same trusted company that produces Botox® and Juvéderm®.
Our bodies are full of naturally occurring molecules that aid in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. One of those molecules is called Deoxycholic acid, which is the main ingredient in Belkyra™. For these purposes, Deoxycholic acid is extracted from plants, so it is still natural.
Once your target area is identified around your double-chin, your practitioner will inject the fatty area with Belkyra™. This results in the destruction of fat cells that can no longer store or accumulate fat. This means those specific cells will not come back.
This revolutionary treatment takes about 15-20 minutes to be administered. You can expect a series of injections into the fat under your chin at each customized treatment session. Many patients experience visible contouring of their chin profile within two treatments.
It is highly likely that once you complete your series of treatments you may never need Belkyra™ again! That’s right, it can be a permanent double chin treatment. Downtime is minimal and occurs most commonly after the first treatment. Most common side effects include but are not limited to swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness, and areas of hardness.
Extremely rare side effects such as trouble swallowing, an uneven smile, discoloration at the injection site, skin ulcers, decreased skin sensation, numbness, or scarring require notifying your doctor and practitioner immediately.
What to Expect During Treatment
Before getting started, you will want to complete a comprehensive consultation with your practitioner to discuss your health history and your treatment goals. You might not be a good candidate for this double chin treatment if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have severe liver or heart problems or have a lot of excess skin or lax neck muscles. For the latter, there are other treatment options that may be suitable for you.
Be sure to mention if you have had or plan to have plastic surgery on your face, neck, or chin, or if you have had other treatments such as Botox® or liposuction. Your practitioner will also want to know if you have or have had any medical conditions in or near the neck as well as any bleeding disorders or difficulty swallowing.
Disclosing this information will not only ensure safe treatment, but also lasting results. Have a candid conversation with your practitioner about your expectations and desired outcome before undergoing treatment.
Belkyra™ can be used to treat both men and women, however, it is not recommended for individuals under 18 years of age.
Once approved for Belkyra™, you’ll have a seat in a private treatment room. Your practitioner will administer a topical anesthetic to reduce any pain or discomfort you may feel during the injections. Prior to this, your practitioner will map out the target treatment areas by gently marking your skin with small dots. This way, you will know the administration is precise and accurate. You can expect anywhere from 20 to 50 injections depending on how large your treatment area is, but the needles are very small.
After the injections are complete, you are free to go about your day. You may want to refrain from vigorous exercise until you feel comfortable doing so. Belkyra™ is relatively painless, and at most, you may feel tender and sore a few days after treatment.
Now, if you are about to start a new medication, remind your doctor or pharmacist that you have received Belkyra™ injections because they are technically considered a prescription. The same goes for dentists as well. Many people separate aesthetic procedures from medical procedures and forget that it is important to keep your healthcare providers in the know to prevent side effects or drug interactions.
As mentioned before, most patients see visible chin contouring after the second treatment session. However, it may take 2 to 4 treatments to achieve maximum results. Some patients require up to 6 treatments spread 4 to 6 weeks apart. It depends on the amount of submental fullness you are trying to reduce.
If you maintain a healthy diet and exercise regularly, your results will last years. Don’t forget to practice good posture when standing and sitting as well.
You Should Consider Belkyra™ if:
- You exercise relentlessly but cannot get rid of your double chin
- Your double chin is the first thing you notice when you look at your pictures
- You want a permanent solution with minimal downtime
- You want to avoid invasive surgical procedures
- Your double chin is making you look older than you really are
- Your double chin is making you look heavier than you really are
- You have a family history of individuals who develop double chins
